An 8-bed hospital unit within the Box Hill Hospital, 1 East has the capacity to help people with severe withdrawal symptoms, including withdrawal seizures. Box Hill Hospital is accessible by bus via the 302 City, 202 East Kew, and 612 Box Hill lines, by train via the Belgrave/Lilydale line, which stops 5-10 minutes away, and by tram via service number 109, with a 5 minute walk to the hospital. Patients must enter through the main entrance at 8 Arnold Street. Turning Point Australia is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and provides free care for Australian residents.
1 East offers treatment for substances such as alcohol, opioids, synthetic drugs, methamphetamine, and illicit benzodiazepines. In addition to medically-monitored detox, individuals with opioid dependence are stabilized via medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using methadone or buprenorphine. Clients receive daily visits from doctors as well as peer support from others with lived experience with substance use. 1 East offers information sessions for family members as well as visiting hours and phone calls after the initial 2-4 days of detox. Treatment at 1 East is limited to 7 days, but Turning Point offers continuing residential care at their Wellington House and outpatient treatment at several facilities or online.
