Red Deer Recovery Community was founded by Marshall Smith, who went through a recovery program himself and is now the chief of staff of Alberta’s Premier. Red Deer Recovery Community is government-funded and run by Edgewood Health Network. This residential program is only for Alberta residents and is completely free. The property is divided into two wings, one for women and one for men with each wing including a movie theatre and gym. There are 75 beds total, 50 for men, and 25 for women.
Treatment at Red Deer Recovery Community lasts 6-12 months with services like detox and evidence-based therapies. Red Deer Recovery Community uses the Recovery Community Approach (RCA) and Recovery Capital Model (RCM) in their treatment. With the RCA, individuals will participate in a group-based approach to recovery and become positive role models for one another. The RCM is in the final stage of treatment where staff will work with individuals to set them up for success post-graduation. Individuals will work with case managers to arrange housing and employment to re-enter society and maintain recovery. Staff can assist with arranging parole and court hearings as needed.
