Since its founding in 1919, the Austen Riggs Center in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts has been dedicated to helping adults (18+) who are struggling with complex and treatment-resistant mental disorders. Their open campus and intensive clinical engagement offer the freedom and responsibility for patients to recognize their problems, rebuild healthy relationships, and take charge of their lives.
The Austen Riggs Center achieves this mission through a multi-disciplinary approach on their beautiful New England campus. Their main goal is to help those who have struggled with treatment in the past, and they accomplish this by addressing sources of suffering, exploring the meaning of symptoms, empowering patients to take an active role in their treatment, and underscoring the importance of relationships. At the core of each patient’s treatment is four times weekly psychodynamic psychotherapy with a doctoral-level clinician. The Center has a full continuum of care that includes residential, step-down, and day treatment programs. They also offer an immersive therapeutic community program and robust activities programs that include theatre classes, ceramics, visual arts, fiber arts, woodworking, and gardening.
